Pozo Azul consists of 700m S1 (max -18m) followed by 300m deep water canal swim and short out of water section over cascades to S2 1950m (-60m).
See NL 146 for previous dives here.
All dives were carried out using closed circuit rebreathers, (Inspiration JM and KISS RPS) with two side mounted cylinders. J Mallinson was continuing with exploration of S2 whilst R.Skorupka made a high grade survey of S2.

15.05.04
DIVER: J.Mallinson, R.Skorupka
First dive to begin transporting equipment for S2 into cave. Two 20l cylinders and medium Zepp towed through S1 and taken to start of cascades. Water here was found to be higher than on previous trips and a handline would be needed to make it easier. The wire tyrolean for moving the scooters over the cascades was also broken and needed replacing.

DIVER: J.Mallinson, R.Skorupka
Two more 20l cylinders, and a handline were taken through S1. Once the handline was installed and the wire tyrolean repaired 4 * 20l and medium Zepp were taken to S2. That evening a clandestine operation saw the team acquire a decompression habitat, which was promptly dropped into the entrance pool.

DIVERS: J.Mallinson, R.Skorupka
The habitat was forced through the narrow gap at the entrance to the cave. Once inside a large Zepp was used to tow the large un-streamlined habitat 700m through S1. This being an eventful first 15mins, until a slow but steady progress could be made. In view of future events on 24.05.04 this over straining of zepp could have had a detrimental effect. The 300m swim up the canal section was slow with both divers pushing/pulling. Similar strenuous efforts were required to carry the habitat along the cascades until eventually it reached the S2 pool. A quick dive by JM in S2 to 6m was carried out to ensure there would be a suitable point for the habitat to sit against roof.

19.05.04
DIVER: J.Mallinson
Towed large Zepp throughS1 and transported to S2 ready for push dive. Attempted to set habitat in roof of S2 at 7m but it became unstable and upturned (when full of air) causing a minor moment of panic. This attempt was abandoned as more packers would be required to keep habitat level.

20.05.04
DIVERS: J.Mallinson, R.Skorupka
Second attempt to set habitat in place was successful using wooden packers on corners. Minor leak from drain plug.

21.05.04
DIVER: J.Mallinson, R.Skorupka
This was a dive to attempt to extend line in S2 from 1950m. Towed medium zepp with large zepp to 1800m, emergency stage 37% nitrox left at 400m. Continued with medium zepp to end of line. New reel tied on and laid line whilst scootering onwards. Passage continues with similar dimensions to rest of sump (6m * 6m min.) but slowly deepening. Turned dive after further 270m (total 2220m) at depth of -70m, passage continues. Total dive time 290 mins . Decompression made warmer by use of habitat to eat and get head and hands out of water. Need to install seat or similar so diver can get whole top half of body out of water.
Both scooters were transported out of the cave following this dive for recharging.

23.05.04
DIVERS: J.Mallinson,R.Skorupka
Large zepp and medium zepp were towed through S1 and both transported to S2 for next push dive.

24.05.04
DIVERS: J.Mallinson. R.Skorupka
Attempt to continue with pushing was aborted 700m into S2 when large zepp developed friction clutch problems and subsequent loss of thrust. Used medium zepp to tow out from this point. All the equipment was removed from S2 following this dive as no further attempts were to be made this trip.
